Artificial Turf vs Grass — Where to Play Football in Lviv
Compare the two main outdoor football surfaces in Lviv — playing characteristics, weather tolerance, footwear, and which venues offer each.
The two surfaces you'll meet in Lviv
Of Lviv's outdoor football venues, 23 are artificial turf and only 3 are grass. There's a reason for that imbalance — and a reason to seek out the rarer surface anyway.
Artificial turf — the workhorse
Strengths
- Plays in any weather. Light rain doesn't stop a turf game. Heavy rain delays it by 30 minutes, max.
- Year-round availability. Most turf venues run from March to November (some heated ones go year-round).
- Predictable bounce. What you put on the ball is what comes off it.
- Lower cost per hour than grass.
Drawbacks
- Hot in summer — surface temperature can hit 50°C on a sunny July afternoon.
- Tougher on the joints. Knee and ankle wear adds up over a season of regular play.
- "Pellet rash" if you slide on a hot, dry pitch.
Footwear
Use turf shoes (TF) or multi-ground (MG) studs. Never wear long metal studs (SG) on artificial turf — they'll trip you and damage the pitch.
Grass — the special occasion
Strengths
- Best feel. The ball moves through grass differently — softer, more rewarding, more rewarding of close control.
- Cooler in summer. A grass pitch on a hot day is 10°C cooler than a turf pitch next door.
- Easier on the joints. Friendly to long-term players.
Drawbacks
- Weather-dependent. Heavy rain = the venue closes for protection. A summer drought = brown, hard, bumpy ground.
- Limited to spring–autumn in Lviv. November to March is essentially off-season.
- Higher cost. Grass costs more to maintain, so per-hour rental is higher.
- Studs only. You'll feel the difference instantly — bring real boots.
Footwear
Soft-ground (SG) studs for wet grass, firm-ground (FG) for dry grass. Don't use turf shoes on real grass — you'll slide constantly.
Which to pick when
| Situation | Pick |
|---|---|
| Mid-week evening, rain forecast | Turf |
| Saturday morning, sunny, want a great touch on the ball | Grass |
| Winter (Nov–Mar) | Indoor only |
| Beginner game with mixed footwear | Turf |
| Competitive 11v11 | Grass if available, else 7v7 turf |
| You're nursing a knee | Grass |
What to ask the organiser
When you join a pickup game, the chat post will say the venue but not always the surface. Ask:
- "Trav або штучка?" / "Grass or turf?" if it's not in the post.
- "Якщо дощ — що?" / "What if it rains?" for grass games.

A note on hybrid pitches
You'll occasionally see "hybrid" advertised — that's grass with synthetic fibres woven in for durability. Plays closer to grass than turf. Lviv has zero verified hybrid pitches as of 2026, but a couple of new venues are rumoured to install them. We'll update this guide when they open.
