5v5 vs 7v7 Football: Which Format to Pick

How 5v5 and 7v7 differ — pitch size, tempo, fitness demands, position roles, and which one suits you best for pickup football in Lviv.

The short answer

If you want more touches, fast tempo, and a smaller commitment — pick 5v5. If you want realistic positions, longer games, and more space — pick 7v7. Both are great. Most regulars play one of each per week.

What the numbers actually mean

  • 5v5: five players per side, including a goalkeeper. Pitch is small (roughly 25 × 15 m indoor, 30 × 20 m outdoor). Games are typically 60–90 minutes with rolling subs.
  • 7v7: seven players per side. Pitch is medium (about 50 × 30 m). Games run 60–90 minutes with positional rotation.
  • 11v11: the full-size game (90+ m pitch). Rare in pickup. We won't cover it here.

Pace and tempo

5v5 is relentless. The ball comes back to you every 8–15 seconds. There's nowhere to hide. Defenders attack, attackers defend. If you're rusty, you'll feel it in your lungs by minute 10.

7v7 is rhythmic. You'll have stretches without touching the ball — that's expected. Good positional sense matters more than speed. You can play a competitive 7v7 well into your 40s if your reading of the game is sharp.

Fitness demands

5v5 7v7
Constant motion Yes No — rotates by zone
Sprint frequency High (every 15s) Medium (every minute)
Recovery time None during play Short breathers when ball is far
Total distance covered (1 hr) ~5–6 km ~6–8 km
Anaerobic load Heavy Moderate

Translation: 5v5 burns more in less time. 7v7 is more steady-state.

Touches per game

In 5v5 a typical player gets 80–120 touches per hour. In 7v7 it's 40–70. If you want to play more football and improve technique, 5v5 is the answer. If you want to work on positioning, off-ball movement, and team play, 7v7 is.

Positions

In 5v5 there are no real positions. Everyone defends and attacks. The "goalkeeper" is just whoever's nearest the goal — sometimes outfield players take it for a few minutes.

In 7v7, you'll see:

  • Goalkeeper (dedicated, rarely rotated mid-game)
  • 2 defenders (centre + wide)
  • 3 midfielders (defensive midfielder, attacking midfielder, winger)
  • 1 striker

This is loose — pickup teams rarely formalise it. But the field encourages role-playing in a way 5v5 doesn't.

Which to pick when

Pick 5v5 if:

  • You haven't played in years and want to build fitness fast
  • You're working on individual technique
  • Indoor only (most indoor halls in Lviv are 5v5)
  • You only have 1 hour total

Pick 7v7 if:

  • You enjoy positional, tactical play
  • You played at a serious level when younger and want similar feel
  • The weather is good and outdoor is open
  • You like longer games (90 min or more)

Mixed-format weeks

The strongest hobby players do one of each per week. 5v5 keeps speed and conditioning; 7v7 maintains tactical sharpness and gives the legs a break from constant high-intensity sprints.

What this means for venues

In Lviv:

  • Indoor halls: almost all 5v5 (parquet)
  • Outdoor turf: mix of 5v5 and 7v7 — the field listing says which size each venue supports
  • Outdoor grass: mostly 7v7 or 11v11

Filter the Lviv field list by what your week's games will be, and pick a regular venue accordingly.

Common mistakes

  • Joining a 7v7 expecting 5v5 fitness. You'll get gassed and play the second half walking.
  • Joining a 5v5 expecting 7v7 positions. You'll stand still and not see the ball.
  • Picking 11v11 alone. Don't. Bring a team. Pickup 11v11 is a structured event, not a drop-in game.
